The Catholic Basilica of the Annunciation is the most impressive and spectacular building in the city. It is considered to be one of the most holy churches in Christianity. An outstanding building, in the center of town, it is built over a cave where Joseph and the Virgin Mary, parents of Jesus, are believed to have lived. On the lower level is the most holy place – Mary’s cave, in which, according to Catholic tradition, Mary was visited by the Archangel Gabriel and told that she was destined to carry the Messiah.
The first church was built there in 427, and other churches have been built on the site and destroyed since then. In the current building, which was completed in 1969, remains of previous churches can be seen. It is one of the biggest, most impressive churches in the Middle East.
